Product Launch: Smartcel 2

The Smartcel began life in 2017, when we were approached by a client looking to develop a custom integration system. As extended service providers and integrators for lab automation, we were surprised to discover how limited the market was for automation workcells. Most integrators were still using aluminium extrusion and Trespa sheet to create rudimentary platforms, much as has been done for 25 years or more. For small integrations, these basic arrangements can help to reduce the initial system cost, but for medium and large systems they can prove extremely inflexible. After evaluating all the options, designs began to create a purpose-built automation platform and the Smartcel was created.

 

Such was the success of the product and how it performed, that the company took the decision to focus the business solely on these platforms. As a result, the LabworX automation series was conceived, aimed at developing customisable automation platforms specifically for the laboratory. Extensive research and testing have been carried out to create robust and reliable hardware, that looks as good as it performs. Whilst extremely disruptive in many ways, the pandemic did allow for expedited development of our products and accessories culminating in a 2021 launch.

Advantages

 offers so many advantages over cheap extrusion-based systems and provides a real tangible product in its own right. The system can be moved around the laboratory and then positioned using the self-levelling feet with ease. Single-point power entry keeps the whole platform compact, safe and easy to maintain. Power is managed by way of two intelligent distribution circuits, one of which is continuous and the other protected by E-Stop. Power loads are monitored and can be automatically shut down in the event of an error or hazard. Additional temperature and humidity logging is also integrated into the system and can be used as additional data points for run logs. Air is distributed around the system via strategically placed cooling fans, preventing equipment from overheating without excessive airflow to affect assays.

Full Protection

The system is fully enclosed and protected by a full interlock system. Users are isolated from hazards relating to moving parts or liquids processed during assay runs. The additional safety measures allow the system to be run above collaborative speeds, whilst still providing options to include collaborative zones. Devices which require safety guarding can also be easily integrated without the need to develop offline protection. The modular safety system hardwired into our control module, caters for expansion beyond nearly all circumstances.

High Density

By keeping the platform compact and embedding monitoring systems, the Smartcel 2 can be used to extend working times well beyond the normal operating hours of many systems. Already conceived as a platform that needs to perform equally efficiently via direct or remote operation, the social distancing measures invoked by the Covid pandemic have reinforced these advantages to many businesses and are becoming mandatory for a growing number.
